You are someone with technical insight and a practical approach. You enjoy finding out why something isn’t working and how to fix it. You enjoy working with your hands, think logically and get things done when they need to be done.

You don’t necessarily need to have come from exactly the same role. Perhaps you’re already working as a technical support staff member, maintenance engineer, breakdown engineer, production engineer, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer or all-round technical support staff member. Perhaps you have a background in construction, installation, mechanical engineering, manufacturing or engineering and would like to make the move to a technical support role.

What’s important is that you work safely, take responsibility and are willing to learn. You don’t need to know how to do everything just yet, but you do need to be curious about technology and understand that agreements, safety and quality are important.

For example, you might recognise yourself in the following:

• You have experience in engineering, maintenance, production, installation, mechanical engineering or a similar field.
• You have technical insight and enjoy thinking in terms of solutions.
• You have knowledge of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics or mechanical maintenance.
• You can approach faults logically and aren’t afraid to ask questions.
• You work safely, tidily and as agreed.
• You can work independently, but you also work well as part of a team.
• You interact easily with colleagues, operators, managers and external parties.
• You are reliable, keen to learn and have a practical approach.
• Ideally, you will have a technical qualification or demonstrable experience in a technical field.
• A VCA certificate would be an advantage, or you should be willing to obtain one.
• A Category B driving licence and your own transport would be an advantage.
• You feel at home in a technical environment and speak the language of the trade.
