Concrete worker/repairer.

As a Concrete Worker / Concrete Repairer, you’ll work on various projects in the construction, renovation and concrete repair sectors. You will be involved in constructing, repairing, protecting and finishing concrete structures. These include floors, walls, balconies, walkways, car parks, foundations, columns, staircases and other concrete elements.

Your duties may vary from project to project. One day you might be preparing concrete repairs, removing damaged concrete and treating reinforcement. The next, you might be working on formwork, applying repair mortar, carrying out grouting work, applying coatings, providing protection or neatly finishing concrete surfaces.

You will be working with hand tools, power tools and various concrete repair products. Precision is key in this work. Concrete must be properly prepared, clean, treated correctly and finished to a high standard. You understand that preparation is often just as important as the end result.

Depending on your experience and the client, your duties may include, amongst other things:

• Carrying out concrete repairs and restoration work.
• Removal of damaged, loose or deteriorated concrete.
• Exposing, cleaning and treating reinforcement.
• Application of repair mortar, concrete mortar or protective coatings.
• Repairing cracks, edges, floors, walls, balconies, galleries and structural components.
• Preparing, erecting and dismantling formwork.
• Installation or handling of reinforcement.
• Pouring, compacting and finishing concrete.
• Sanding, grinding, chipping, drilling and cleaning concrete surfaces.
• Carrying out coating, impregnation or protective work.
• Work in accordance with drawings, work instructions or directions from the foreman or site manager.
• Ensuring a tidy and safe workplace.
• Working alongside colleagues, foremen, site managers and other tradespeople.
• Contributing ideas for practical solutions on the building site.

So you’re not just repairing or working with concrete. You ensure that concrete structures are restored to a strong, safe and neat condition.

You’re a skilled tradesperson who knows how to get things done. You enjoy working with your hands, have a feel for materials and believe it’s important that the work is done properly. Concrete work requires strength, precision and patience. You understand that.

You don’t necessarily need to have all your qualifications to hand. We consider experience, commitment and craftsmanship to be just as important. Perhaps you’ve been working as a concrete repairer for years. Perhaps you have a background in concrete construction, structural work, renovation, façade renovation, finishing, demolition or general construction, and you’d like to develop your skills further in concrete repair.

What matters is that you work safely, stick to agreements and contribute practical ideas on site. You can work independently, but you also work well as part of a team. You don’t need to be one for grand claims; as long as your work speaks for itself.

For example, you might recognise yourself in the following:

• You have experience as a concrete worker, concrete repairer, concrete carpenter, structural work assistant, renovation assistant or in a similar role.
• You have experience in concrete repair, concrete pouring, formwork, reinforcement or restoration work.
• You are proficient in using hand tools and power tools.
• You work neatly, safely and as agreed.
• You have an eye for quality, preparation and finishing touches.
• You are physically fit and have no problem with practical work.
• You think in terms of solutions and get things done.
• You can work independently, but you also work well as part of a team.
• You should ideally hold a VCA certificate, or be willing to obtain one.
• A Category B driving licence and your own transport would be an advantage.
• You feel at home in the construction industry and speak the language of the trade.
