Heat pump mechanic.

As a Heat Pump Technician, you will be responsible for installing, connecting, maintaining and inspecting heat pump systems. You will work with private individuals, businesses, housing associations, commercial projects or renovation projects where sustainability and comfort are key priorities.

Your duties may vary depending on the client. One day you might be installing a complete heat pump system; the next, you might be replacing parts, connecting pipes, assisting with commissioning, or carrying out maintenance and inspections on existing systems.

You will be working with indoor units, outdoor units, buffer tanks, pipework, fittings, control systems, electrical connections and, in some cases, in combination with underfloor heating, central heating systems, water heaters or air-conditioning systems. In doing so, you will pay attention to safety, tidiness, functionality and the finish of the installation.

Depending on your experience and the client, your duties may include, amongst other things:

• Assembly and installation of heat pump systems.
• Installation of indoor units, outdoor units, buffer tanks and pipework.
• Connecting water-side, refrigeration and electrical components.
• Working on hybrid and fully electric heat pumps.
• Inspection, maintenance and testing of installations.
• Providing support with the commissioning of heat pumps.
• Adjusting and checking control systems, thermostats and components.
• Carrying out maintenance, fault-finding and repairs.
• Working on systems that combine central heating boilers, underfloor heating, water heaters or air-conditioning systems.
• Checking pressure, temperature, flow, connections and operation.
• Neat finishing of pipework, penetrations, brackets and connections.
• Working in accordance with safety regulations and technical guidelines.
• Maintaining contact with customers, colleagues, the work preparation team or the planning department.
• Ensuring a tidy and safe workplace.
• Helping to come up with practical solutions on site.

So you’re not just installing or connecting systems. You ensure that a heat pump system works properly, is neatly finished and continues to operate reliably.

You are a skilled technician who enjoys hands-on work. You work meticulously, think in terms of solutions and consider it important that customers are satisfied with the end result. You know that good installation work is all about preparation, neat assembly and working safely.

You don’t necessarily need to have been working as a heat pump engineer for years. Perhaps you have a background in installation engineering, central heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, electrical engineering, plumbing or service and maintenance. What’s important is that you keep to your commitments, work to a high standard and take responsibility on site. You can work independently, but you also work well as part of a team. You’re not afraid to ask questions, you contribute ideas and you take the initiative when something needs to be done.

For example, you might recognise yourself in the following:

• You have experience as a heat pump fitter, installation engineer, central heating engineer, service engineer, refrigeration engineer or in a similar role.
• You have technical insight and an interest in sustainable systems.
• You have experience with heat pumps, central heating systems, pipework, air conditioning, refrigeration technology or electrical engineering.
• You can install, connect and finish the job neatly.
• You work safely, accurately and as agreed.
• You’ll offer practical solutions when faults or challenges arise on site.
• You can work independently, but you also work well as part of a team.
• You are customer-friendly, reliable and presentable.
• Experience with F-gases, STEK, CO certification or specialist training would be an advantage.
• A VCA certificate is an advantage, or you must be willing to obtain one.
• A Category B driving licence is important for on-site work.
• You’re at home with technology and speak the language of the trade.
