Glazier.

As a glazier, you will be involved in various projects within the construction, renovation and maintenance sectors. This includes installing, replacing and repairing glass in houses, apartment blocks, commercial premises, schools, care homes and other buildings.

Your duties may vary from project to project. One day you might be fitting HR++ glass into existing window frames; the next, you might be replacing broken panes, working on new-build projects, fitting safety glass or carrying out repairs following damage. You may also be involved in removing old glass, preparing window frames, fitting glazing beads and neatly sealing the joints.

You work carefully and safely. Glass must be measured, handled, fitted and finished to a high standard. In doing so, you pay attention to dimensions, fit, glazing beads, glazing bars, sealant joints and the condition of the window frame. You understand that proper glazing is not just about installation, but also about thorough preparation and a neat finish.

Depending on your experience and the client, your duties may include, amongst other things:

• Fitting, replacing and repairing glass.
• Working with single-glazed, double-glazed, HR++, safety or insulating glass.
• Removal of old or damaged glass.
• Measuring, checking and preparing glassware.
• Preparing and inspecting window frames, rebates and glazing beads.
• Fitting glazing blocks, glazing beads and seals.
• Sealing and neatly finishing the fitted glass.
• Carrying out repair work following damage or a leak.
• Working on new-build, renovation, maintenance and sustainability projects.
• Check that the glass fits properly, is secure and has a neat finish.
• Work in accordance with safety regulations and handle materials with care.
• Working with colleagues, site managers, contractors and other tradespeople.
• Ensuring a tidy and safe workplace.
• Helping to come up with practical solutions on site.

So you’re not just fitting glass. You ensure that the work is completed safely, to a high standard and with attention to detail. From preparation to the finishing touches: your craftsmanship makes all the difference.

You are a skilled tradesperson who works with precision and understands the importance of working safely and carefully. You have a good eye for measurements, work neatly and consider it important that glasswork is fitted correctly and finished to a high standard.

You don’t necessarily need to have all the relevant qualifications. We consider experience, commitment and craftsmanship to be just as important. Perhaps you’ve been working as a glazier for years. Perhaps you have a background in construction, renovation, maintenance, carpentry, fitting or finishing work, and would like to specialise further in glazing.

What’s important is that you’re reliable, keep your commitments and treat materials, tools and the workplace with care. You can work independently, but also function well as part of a team. You contribute practical ideas and ensure that customers, residents or clients are well looked after.

For example, you might recognise yourself in the following:

• You have experience as a glazier, fitter, carpenter, maintenance worker or in a similar role.
• You have experience of fitting or replacing glass, or are willing to learn how to do so.
• You can measure, check and finish with precision.
• You have an eye for window frames, glazing beads, sealant work, joints and finishing touches.
• You work safely, tidily and as agreed.
• You are proficient in using hand tools and glazing tools.
• You have a practical mindset and contribute ideas on site.
• You can work independently, but you also work well as part of a team.
• You should ideally hold a VCA certificate, or be willing to obtain one.
• A Category B driving licence and your own transport would be an advantage.
• You feel at home in the construction industry and speak the language of the trade.
