As a Construction Planning Officer, you’ll be involved in the phase where a construction plan evolves from an idea into a technically, practically and financially viable plan. You look beyond the drawings alone. You consider constructability, scheduling, costs, choice of materials, construction methods, risks and the practical feasibility of the project.
You often act as the link between the client, architect, structural engineer, consultants, quantity surveyor, works planner, project manager and the construction team. You ensure that all the information is collated, assessed and translated into a clear plan that allows the project to move forward.
Depending on the client, you will work on projects involving new-build, refurbishment, renovation, maintenance or sustainability improvements. You may be involved in drawing up a preliminary design, final design, technical specifications, budget, contract documents or the handover to the construction phase.
You keep an eye on the big picture during the preparation phase. When decisions need to be made, you contribute your insights on the implications for costs, technical aspects, planning and implementation. This includes considerations such as material choices, structural details, alternative construction methods, planning permission documents, suppliers, subcontractors or changes requested by the client.

So you’re not just busy with the preparations, but above all with thinking ahead. You ensure that a building plan isn’t just attractive on paper, but also works in practice.
You are someone with an understanding of construction, a broad perspective and a practical way of thinking. You find it interesting to look at a building plan at an early stage and contribute ideas on the best approach. Not just from a technical point of view, but also with an eye for costs, planning and implementation.
You don’t necessarily need to be coming from exactly the same role. Perhaps you have experience as a work planner, quantity surveyor, architectural draughtsman, project co-ordinator or assistant project manager, and you’d like to move more towards the front end of the construction process. Perhaps you’re already working as a planning coordinator and are ready for a new environment or different projects.
What’s important is that you have a sound understanding of construction, can adapt easily and understand what’s needed to turn a design into a feasible and workable plan. You take a critical look at drawings, costs, scheduling, material choices and practical details. You’re not afraid to ask questions, you spot potential issues early on and you enjoy contributing ideas to find solutions.
